Why should taxpayers get involved?
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, in fiscal year 2005-06 the City of San Diego budgeted about $19 million to maintain Qualcomm Stadium and make the bond payments on the Stadium’s 1997 expansion. (Midway area still paying for stadium long after bond, B1 10-9-05)

As a result, and according to the Citizen’s Task Force, it is fair to say that the current stadium site siphons millions of dollars out of the City’s general fund – away from the police and fire departments, away from libraries and other essential City services.

The Citizen’s Task Force also found that, as of January 2003, up to $50 million of deferred maintenance had accumulated at Qualcomm Stadium. Under the current lease, the City is obligated to keep the stadium functioning. At some point the multi-million dollar bill for deferred maintenance will come due and taxpayers will have no choice but to pay it or close down the stadium.
