Economic Impact of the Loss of an NFL Team

Many other cities did not want to spend tax dollars to keep teams in their cities and ended up spending hundreds of millions of dollars to try to win new teams.

St. Louis, Cleveland, Houston and Baltimore all let their teams go and spent hundreds of millions of dollars more to attract a new team than it would have cost them to keep the franchises they already had.

  • St. Louis lost their team in 1988. In 1995 they spent $281 million to attract the Rams.
  • Cleveland lost their team in 1995. In 1999 they spent $212 million to attract a Browns team back.
  • Houston lost their team in 1997. In 2002 they spent $309 million to attract the Texans.
  • Baltimore lost their team in 1984. In 1996 they spent $200 million to attract the Ravens.
